England:
England: a country of history, heritage and tradition, richly endowed with style and culture. Britain is in fact the most popular overseas destination for Americans and for good reason. The history is world famous as is the cultural buzz and lifestyle you see reflected from today`s movies, television and music. Traveling to Britain is easy, as transatlantic airlines add more services to British cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, as well as London. England is generally divided into regions. The area surrounding London is known as the Home Counties. East Anglia, a region of agricultural flatlands, spans the area northeast of London, from the River Thames to The Wash (a North Sea Bay). From Gloucester to The Wash and from the Humber estuary to Liverpool is known as the Midlands, the heart of industrial England. North of the Humber and the River Mersey, reaching to the Scottish border, is the North Country, home to enchanting and sometimes rugged countryside that alternates with vast stretches of industrial development. The West Country is the area southwest of Bristol and Bournemouth that includes the sometimes pastoral, sometimes rugged terrain of Devonshire and Cornwall. Rocky cliffs, seagulls and the briny foam crashing on the beach give this region much of its character. With a population of just under eight million, London is Europe`s largest city, spreading across an area of more than 620 square miles from its core on the River Thames. London, the world`s capital of theatre, fashion, the arts, and some great restaurants, to England with its historic cities and quaint villages. London`s traditional sights – Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St Paul`s Cathedral and the Tower of London – continue to draw in millions of tourists every year. Besides being the official London residence of The Queen, Buckingham Palace is also the busy administrative headquarters of the monarchy and has probably the most famous and easily recognisable façade of any building in the world. The Palace is a working building and the centrepiece of Britain`s constitutional monarchy. It houses the offices of those who support the day-to-day activities and duties of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh and their immediate family. The Palace is also the venue for great Royal ceremonies, State Visits and Investitures, all of which are organised by the Royal Household.
Monuments from the capital`s more glorious past are everywhere to be seen, from medieval banqueting halls and the great churches of Christopher Wren to the eclectic Victorian architecture of the triumphalist British Empire. There is also much enjoyment to be had from the city`s quiet Georgian squares, the narrow alleyways of the City of London, the riverside walks, and the quirks of what is still identifiably a collection of villages. Around nearly every bend in the road you`ll find stately homes, crumbling castles, magnificent gardens, thatch-roofed cottages, cozy pubs and beautiful churches to explore. It`s easy to while away hours admiring the details—a painting here, an architectural detail there.
In fact, despite the country`s relatively small size, you never seem to see it all. From Shakespeare and royalty to Stonehenge and thousands of years of history, England is simply a wonderful place to visit time and time again. You`ll find a wide range of things to see and do and places to stay, but whenever and wherever you go in Britain; you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome from the British people. You are sure to want to return again and again.
